A good title sequence sets the mood for the movie or tv show you’re about to see. And no, they’re not there just to show you the credits, cast and crew. They can work as a storytelling tool, as they can be filled with easter eggs or edited in a certain way to make you feel specific things and put you in the mood the director wants you to be. According to elsevier.com, “title sequences are a powerful expression of motion graphics. They are a prelude to the movie. They engage the audience by hinting at what is about to start, whether it’s a movie, TV show, or Web animation. One of the primary functions of a title sequence is to set the tone of the movie you are about to see.

Effective title sequences foreshadow themes of the movie without overshadowing the movie itself: They anticipate what will come later in the movie but do not give away key plot points. Title sequences shouldn’t summarize the plot of the movie or give away a perpetrator’s identity that is supposed to be revealed only at the ending. Sometimes a title sequence can be designed so ingeniously that it adds additional meaning, or, even better, exposes some details that are missing from the movie or could go unnoticed.”
