If you consider yourself a gamer, you probably have one or two video games that you remember and cherish with love and call them “your favorite games EVER”. Don’t you wish you could play them all over again like the first time and experience them as a brand new journey? Well, now you probably can! The latest trend within the video game industry is the remake of classic video games, as companies are using nostalgia as their ammo, turning the technology offered by the latest consoles generation into a gateway to retelling the stories we all played and loved already, offering gamers a brand new experience and capitalizing on products they already know work and have a strong following within their target audiences.

Take for example ‘Resident Evil 4’, the fourth main installment from the survival horror franchise developed by Japanese renowned game developing company, Capcom. Originally released in 2005, gaining a 96 over 100 global score from fans and selling 7.4MM copies in all of its formats worldwide, being the only game from the series to hit this benchmark. The said was named as one of the most iconic and game-changing features from the 2000s, setting a new standard for survival horror and shooter games overall. Well, just like the movie remake has been a “thing” in the past years, so it’s starting to happen with video games. A ‘RE 4’ remake was released in March 2023, retelling the story with the virtues of the new console engines and graphics. As the Reno Gazette Journal stated in its review: “The Resident Evil 4 remake brings new life to a classic for series veterans while introducing what’s arguably the best Resident Evil game to a new generation of players. It takes an already great game and makes it even better with plenty
of polish and quality-of-life improvements. Some might decry that extra polish and feel it sanitizes some of the tension from the original experience. It also doesn’t have the same groundbreaking feel that the original had for its time. For people who want a modern take on a great classic, however, Resident Evil 4 is a remake done right”. The game has also been voted by the fandom as Game of the Year for 2023, selling 5 million copies by July 2023. So, it worked and they got away with it.

Just like Capcom brought back RE 4, we can expect a ‘Silent Hill 2’ remake from Konami by 2024. Other classic games being redone include GTA 4, Max Payne 1 and 2, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, just to name a few. And just like happened with moviegoers questioning the hype of the remakes and reboots, as it results in a lack of new stories, some say: “I already played that, I don’t need to play that again, I want new games”. But yes, relieving the joy of playing a game you hold close to your heart can result in a ‘Ratatouille’ moment that plenty of people enjoy. We shall wait and see what route the developing companies decide to take for the long run, but in the meantime… Which video game would you like to see remade?
